Launch Photos Available & A Great Word of the Day: Lugubrious

Okay, the party is over and we are back to work once again.  I have a new word for today’s blog and what a very interesting word it is, submitted by Brian Keitch of Pierre SD.  Today’s word of the day is lugubrious.

Wow, Brian, I have to admit this is a great word.  It is my understanding that you heard the word lugubrious while listening to a book on tape. Stumped by its meaning, I hear that you looked to your wife and asked “What the heck does that mean?”  Good question!

I love it. I honestly do!  There is nothing better than a good word to stimulate the brain into working.  I also have to say that books on tape are spectacular.  I love to listen to them when driving long distances or flying to my next destination.  The written word is awesome in any form. But enough about that; let’s move onto our new and interesting word.  Today’s definition comes from our online source at www.thefreedictionary.com

lu·gu·bri·ous  (l-gbr-s, -gy-)
adj.
Mournful, dismal, or gloomy, especially to an exaggerated or ludicrous degree.

Well, I am almost positive when I say that we have all had a lugubrious day before!  The word lugubrious stems from the Latin word lugere, which means to morn.  I find it interesting that the word lugubrious has not stayed in the mainstream of our vocabulary. It really is a very interesting word.

However, it is much easier to state a sentence using comparable words in the same sentence such as “It was a dark and dreary night, gloomy and mournful beyond compare.”

I love adjectives. The right adjective can turn a sentence from dull and boring to dramatic and suspenseful.

So, how can we wrap this word up and into our series the “Prime Immortals”?  I would think that would be rather easy, don’t you?  How about we put it to the test.

A challenge/contest… Give me a sentence that uses the word lugubrious along with the Prime Immortals plot and you will win a personal entry of Gelmir’s journal which may give you a hint as to where the next key could possibly be.

There are twelve keys and for those of you who have not read the book “The Immortal Lost”, you can get your copy on line at www.primeimmortals.com.  If you find out where the next key is, you will be entered into a drawing for a very cool gift.  I am thinking e-book or something along those electronic lines.  We will announce the winner during the launch of the next book, Dark Days, having a planned release date of September 2011.

So until we blog again, Read On!!         All my best, H.R. Phillips
